Aceh violence leaves four dead<\/p>\n
BANDA ACEH, Aceh: At least two civilians and two suspected
\nguerrillas were killed in the latest violence to hit the
\nIndonesian province of Aceh, residents and the military said
\nSunday.<\/p>\n
Residents in Kandang, North Aceh district, told AFP that two
\nunidentified men on a motorcycle shot dead two youths at a
\nroadside coffee stall late on Friday.<\/p>\n
Troops killed two suspected GAM members in a clash in Kampung
\nPaya Biek in East Aceh district, also on Friday, Aceh Military
\nspokesman Major Zaenal Muttaqin said.<\/p>\n
Two AK automatic rifles and ammunition was recovered, he
\nadded.<\/p>\n
Jakarta has branded the GAM as terrorists.<\/p>\n
The government and GAM agreed on truces during successive
\nmeetings in Switzerland since 2000 but the ceasefires have rarely

PONTIANAK, West Kalimantan: Idrin M Su'ud, West Kalimantan's
\nEnvironmental Impact Management Agency (Bapedal) chief, said late
\non Friday that 11 hot spots had been identified in Ketapang,
\nLandak and Sambas regencies.<\/p>\n
He said that based on the Pongi Satellite images from the
\nMinistry of Forestry, the hot spots had appeared in community
\nforests.<\/p>\n
\"I have checked the forests and found that the fires were
\ncaused by nature, not by people who wanted to clear new land,\" he
\nsaid, adding that the two spots in Sambas were in Paloh and
\nTebang (Setebang).<\/p>\n
Idrin had yet to check out the nine hot spots in Ketapang and
\nLandak due to the distances involved.<\/p>\n
Elsewhere, he said that Pontianak was covered by thick haze
\nbecause of lack of air circulation caused by \"too many new
\nresidential and industrial areas\".<\/p>\n
Governor Aspar Aswin asked local people not to set fire to the
\nforest when clearing new fields, and not to go out at night. He
\nsuggested that they use four-wheeled vehicles and masks if they
\nwanted to leave their homes.<\/p>\n
\"The smoke is so thick and dangerous to people's health,
\nespecially after 12 midnight. The air pollution index can reach

MATARAM, West Nusa Tenggara: Minister of Religious Affairs
\nSaid Agil Husin Almunawar inaugurated a Koran laboratory on
\nMonday at the campus of the Islamic Higher Learning Institute
\n(STAIN) in Matraman.<\/p>\n
During the inauguration the minister disclosed the importance
\nof the lab for the community and promised to completely furnish
\nit with various facilities.<\/p>\n
\"Despite the fact the Koran has only 6,236 verses, it can be
\nreferred to as a guidance to solve all complex human problems,\"
\nMinister Said Agil was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n
STAIN chairman Lukman Al Hakim revealed that the lab was the
\nfirst of its kind in Indonesia and was expected to play a
\nsignificant role in helping the Department of Religious Affairs
\ncheck errors in printing prior to publication.<\/p>\n
He explained some 1000 Korans published by the department
\ncontained many printing errors and had to be withdrawn from
\ncirculation.<\/p>\n
The inauguration of the lab was related to the holding of the
\nKoran Recital contest scheduled to be held from July 6 through

KENDARI, Southeast Sulawesi: In a bid to maintain good
\nrelations between Indonesia and Australia, particularly with the
\nlocal administration and its residents, an Australian warship,
\nHMAS, called at the city's port on Friday and stayed here until
\nMonday.<\/p>\n
During their brief stay in the city, Captain John Maskey,
\nalong with his 67 crew members, not only made courtesy calls to
\nthe mayor and chief of the province's naval base and visited
\ntourist resorts in the area but also held friendly matches with
\nlocal naval officers.<\/p>\n
Australia's naval assistant to the defense attache Toni Maher
\nsaid the call was meant to popularize Australia and her flag with
\nthe residents and to foster relations with the local
\nadministration.<\/p>\n
The warship was a special attraction to local residents,

MANOKWARI, Papua: To overcome the shortage of teaching staff,
\nthe Manokwari administration has hired at least 142 temporary
\nteachers to teach in remote areas of Indonesia's easternmost
\nprovince.<\/p>\n
Head of the Regional Education Office Nico Baru revealed here
\non Saturday that the teachers worked on a contract basis with a
\nsalary of Rp 400,000 a month. He added most of them were
\nrecruited after they completed their second year of education at
\nCendrawasih University.<\/p>\n
According to Nico, the teachers could be appointed as
\npermanent staff if they performed well.<\/p>\n
The teacher shortage posed a big problem for the backward
\nprovince, resulting in the disruption of schooling in the area.<\/p>\n
Governor J.P. Solossa revealed that some 14,347 teachers
\nwould be needed for various levels of education from kindergarten
\nup to senior high school.<\/p>\n
Solossa further said many schools were not able to overcome
\nthe shortfall owing to their lack of funds to hire new teachers.
