Aceh troops brace for mass strike<\/p>\n

The military and police in Aceh are anticipating a mass strike
\nduring the celebration of Independence Day on Aug. 17 in the
\nrestive province.<\/p>\n
Police chief Insp. Gen. Yusuf Manggabarani told a media
\nconference the security personnel had heard rumors of a mass
\nstrike circulating in the westernmost province.<\/p>\n
\"Although it's only a rumor, we are ready to anticipate any
\nstrike call and ask the people not to be easily provoked,\" Yusuf
\nsaid on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
He said security troops would maintain order and peace ahead
\nof the national celebration, so that there would be no reason for
\npeople to stop their activities.<\/p>\n
Yusuf asserted there would be no deployment of reinforcements
\nin connection with the Independence Day celebration.<\/p>\n
Provincial military spokesman Lt. Col. Firdaus, who
\naccompanied Yusuf during the media meeting, called on Aceh
\nresidents to hoist the red and white flag in observance of the
\nnational day.<\/p>\n
\"It's not an order, because all Indonesian nationals normally
\nraise the flag to honor Independence Day,\" Firdaus said.<\/p>\n
Natural resource-rich Aceh has been rocked by a rebellion
\nwaged by the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) since the mid-1970s.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, a Muslim cleric was gunned down in the latest
\nkilling of a community leader in Aceh. A military officer, Maj.
\nZaenal Muttaqien, said Tengku Ismail Osman was fatally shot late
\nMonday in front of his house on the outskirts of Lhokseumawe<\/p>\n
Separately, Jafit Zaim of the Indonesian Red Cross said two
\nother bodies were discovered Tuesday on the outskirts of
\nLhokseumawe.<\/p>",
