Aceh rebels admit attack on police<\/p>\n
BANDA ACEH, Aceh (JP): Free Aceh Movement (GAM) separatist
\nrebels admitted on Monday to having attacked Police Mobile
\nBrigade (Brimob) officers in Nisam district of North Aceh,
\nkilling three of them and severely injuring five others.<\/p>\n
GAM representative in the joint security committee, Amni bin
\nAhmad Marzuki, told the media at Hotel Kuala Tripa here the
\nambush on Sunday was conducted \"for self-defense\". A GAM member
\nwas shot dead in the clash.<\/p>\n
Amni said there were conflicting chronologies between the
\nsecurity forces and GAM on the incident, but confirmed \"it was
\ndone by GAM members and we express sincere condolences to the
\nvictims' families.\"<\/p>\n
\"We hope that none of these things will ever occur again,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
But gunfights between security forces and GAM reportedly
\ncontinued in Nisam, Kuta Makmur and Muara Dua in North Aceh. No
\nimmediate report on casualties was available.<\/p>\n
Head of the government representatives to the joint committee
\non security modalities set up to implement the truce, Senior
\nSuperintendent Ridwan Karim, said he has already filed a protest
\nwith GAM and a higher forum in Geneva over the attack.<\/p>\n
\"Security forces will track down the shooters as the ambush
\nclearly violates the ground rules already agreed between the
\nRepublic of Indonesia and GAM,\" Ridwan said.<\/p>\n
The three-month truce, signed in Geneva in May and effective
\non June 2, calls for both sides to reduce tension and violence in
\nAceh by confining their troops and laying down their weapons.<\/p>\n
GAM commander in North Aceh Abu Sofyan Daud said the incident
\nwas not intentional but was unavoidable.<\/p>\n
\"We encountered the Brimob officers as we were trying to evade
\npursuit by members of the sub-district military command in Buloh
\nBlang Ara,\" Daud said.<\/p>\n
Separately in Jakarta, the Ministry for Political Affairs and
\nSecurity Spokesman Brig. Gen. I Wayan Karya said the humanitarian
\naid in Aceh will be mainly used to supply basic necessities and
\nprovide education for children.<\/p>\n
\"The Coordinating Ministry of People's Welfare and Poverty
\nEradication has setup a task force to handle all humanitarian aid
\nto ensure that it will go straight to the people,\" Wayan said
\nafter the political affairs and security meeting on Monday.<\/p>\n
The government will sign an agreement with the United Nations
\nDevelopment Program (UNDP) to coordinate the disbursement and
\ngathering of the humanitarian aid for Aceh form inside or outside
\nthe country. No definite schedule has been set for the signing.<\/p>\n
\"Only the Coordinating Ministry of People's Welfare and
\nPoverty Eradication and UNDP are authorized to receive and
\ndisburse humanitarian aid for Aceh. All aid goes through only one
