Aceh peace possible<\/p>\n
A poor peace is better than a great war, so the old adage
\ngoes.<\/p>\n
Recently, life in Aceh has been peaceful as a result of
\nnegotiations, not a military victory. This peace must be
\nmaintained and improved. A military operation must not be too
\nhastily considered.<\/p>\n
Ordinary people will become victims in any military operation.
\nIn the case of Aceh, the victims will be ordinary Acehnese and
\nIndonesian soldiers. Some of the Indonesian soldiers may be
\nAcehnese, while some members of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) may
\nbe non-Acehnese Indonesians.<\/p>\n
It is wrong to believe that only those demanding a military
\noperation in Aceh, regardless of the potential victims, love the
\nintegrity of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.
\nPeople trying patiently and indefatigably to prevent bloodshed in
\nAceh also want to see the integrity of the Republic of Indonesia
\nintact.<\/p>\n
The Aceh question is a domestic problem and must be solved in
\nthe way a father solves his family problems. Both conflicting
\nparties keep their heads cool and ensure that a rational solution
\nwill prevail: A father fosters, not kills, his son.<\/p>\n
If the Henry Dunant Center is deemed ineffective as a
\nmediator, the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) may
\ntake its place. The OIC successfully ended the war between Iran
\nand Iraq and brought peace to the Islamic fighters in Moro and
\nthe Philippines government.<\/p>\n
In the context of Aceh, it may be necessary to have an OIC-
\nsupervised, all-inclusive negotiation that will involve many
\nparties, such as ulemas, non-governmental organizations,
\nstudents, the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry,
\nfarmers and so forth, apart from the Indonesian government and
\nGAM.<\/p>\n
In this way, GAM will eventually realize the need to help
\nmaintain the integrity of the Unitary State of the Republic of
\nIndonesia, as in the past it also helped fight for it. GAM will
\nno longer mean "Free Aceh Movement" but "Independent Aceh
\nMovement", with a special wide-ranging autonomy within the
\nUnitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.<\/p>\n
