Aceh and Papua<\/p>\n
While acknowledging our deep affection for the Iraqi people,
\nwe have our own unresolved problems: Aceh and Papua.<\/p>\n
Recently, violence has been escalating in the two provinces.
\nMembers of the Free Papua Organization (OPM) were reported to
\nhave broken into the Indonesian Military (TNI) arsenal to steal
\nguns. The separatists took several guns after killing two TNI
\nmembers.<\/p>\n
In Aceh, the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) has yet to lay down its
\narms following the Cessation of Hostilities agreement. GAM has
\nrecently taken hostage an off-duty Indonesian Air Force member,
\nwho was with his family.<\/p>\n
We see those involved in the clashes growing frustrated. The
\noffice of the Joint Security Council (JSC) has been attacked
\ntwice by the Acehnese, who accused the JSC of having failed to
\ncreate and maintain peace in Aceh. We all know that uncontrolled
\nanger could hamper the implementation of the peace agreement in
\nAceh.<\/p>\n
We acknowledge the international efforts to deal with the
\nproblems in Aceh and Papua. But we should be aware that the two
\nrestive areas are part of the unitary state of Indonesia, and
\nthere is no bargaining on that.<\/p>\n
We Indonesians should show our good will to settle the
\ninternal rifts in a very humane and honorable manner.<\/p>\n
Development in the two provinces needs to be accelerated, and
\nthis has been apparently ignored by the government.<\/p>\n
When we have done our best, we will just say 'No' to any
\nparties that want to rock the unitary state of Indonesia.<\/p>\n

The attitude of the media<\/p>\n
America has become a center of learning for the international
\npress. It has many reputable schools of journalism. Independence
\nand balance are the journalistic principles taught in those
\nschools.<\/p>\n
However, paying close attention to the media coverage on the
\nU.S. invasion of Iraq, we've been skeptical: Is the U.S. really a
\nmodel for the international press?<\/p>\n
Have we seen the Iraqi people suffering as a result of the
\nattack in Cable News Network (CNN), which is acclaimed as a
\nreputable television station? CNN has been imbalanced in its
\nreports.<\/p>\n
CNN, NBC, Fox, and dozens of television stations and print
\nmedia in the U.S. have never featured the hundreds of Iraqi
\ncivilians killed in the coalition forces' attack. They have just
\naired shots of the coalition troops, with their modern weaponry.<\/p>\n
In other words, the American media supports the brutal actions
\nof their military forces. Moreover there are many "embedded" U.S.
\nreporters; traveling side by side with the military in Iraq.<\/p>\n
Veteran journalist Peter Arnett was fired from NBC soon after
\nhe told Iraqi television that America had failed in its
\noffensive.<\/p>\n
It is fortunate that we now can see other Middle Eastern
\ntelevision broadcasts, such as Al Jazeera, Al Arabiyah. and Dubai
\nTV, which provide the world with balanced reporting on the Iraq
\nwar. Pictures that did not appear on CNN have been made available
\nby them.<\/p>\n
