The central government has channeled trillions of rupiah to
\nAceh, but the province has hardly enjoyed the fruits of
\ndevelopment. What is wrong with this situation?<\/p>\n
Apparently, it is common practice in Aceh for a company that
\nhas won a tender for a government project to be required to set
\naside a bigger portion of the funds allocated for the project
\neither for the separatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM) or high-
\nranking officials of the provincial administration.<\/p>\n
Many companies, therefore, decide to take up the projects even
\nthough most of the funds intended for them end up in the pockets
\nof certain GAM officers or government officials, because they can
\nalways abandon the projects less than halfway through for
\nsecurity reasons. In this way, the projects are left unfinished
\nand the companies concerned can enjoy the remaining funds.<\/p>\n
As this situation has continued for many years at the expense
\nof the ordinary Acehnese, it is now time that the Aceh provincial
\nadministration be subjected to auditing.<\/p>\n
The governor, regents and other regional administration
\nofficials must account for this matter.<\/p>\n
