Accusing GAM of
\nschool arson<\/p>\n

A week after the declaration of martial law in Nanggroe Aceh
\nDarussalam, about 350 school buildings have been burned down,
\ncausing some 100,000 students to be without a school.<\/p>\n
It would make sense to say that the Free Aceh Movement (GAM)
\nhas burnt these buildings because it is at school that Indonesian
\nnationalism, which GAM hates most, is being nurtured.<\/p>\n
The burning of schools must be condemned. By committing this
\ncrime, GAM has prevented the younger Acehnese generation from
\npursuing knowledge. Ironically, GAM leaders keep saying that they
\nare trying to elevate the living standard of the Acehnese.<\/p>\n
One of GAM leaders, Teungku Amri bin Abd has returned to the
\nfold of the Unitary Republic of Indonesia. He said that GAM had
\nnow deviated from the original spirit of their struggle.
\nAcehnese are now distancing themselves from GAM. Therefore to win
\nthe hearts and minds of the Acehnese, the government must
\nimmediately repair or replace public facilities that GAM has
\ndestroyed.<\/p>\n
The integrated operation and the security restoration
\noperation must proceed.<\/p>\n
Pressure must be applied on GAM through international lobbying
\nto ensure that it gives up its ambition to set up a separate Aceh
\nstate. This is the consequence of maintaining Aceh as an integral
\npart of Indonesia.<\/p>\n
