        "content": "<p>Accusation on scam denied<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The city office of the Ministry of Social<br>\nServices denied on Friday accusations from a group of disabled<br>\npeople that the office had embezzled funds allocated to purchase<br>\nartificial limbs for the handicapped.<\/p>\n<p>Head of the office's disabled people's affairs, Yugiyani,<br>\nasked that the disabled prove the charge.<\/p>\n<p>\"I'm ready to face their accusation even under police<br>\nquestioning,\" she told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n<p>She said the artificial limbs were supplied free of charge,<br>\neven though she admitted that the products were of low quality.<\/p>\n<p>The head of the Jakarta chapter of the Indonesian Advocating<br>\nCommittee for the Disabled, Azwardi Ujang, accused the office on<br>\nMonday of having embezzled funds allocated for the procurement of<br>\nartificial legs.<\/p>\n<p>Ujang said on Friday, however, that it was Yugiyani herself<br>\nwho had asked the handicapped last month to purchase 10 low-<br>\nquality artificial limbs at between Rp 1.4 million (US$140) and<br>\nRp 1.7 million each.<\/p>\n<p>The artificial legs to be given to the recipients normally<br>\ncost only Rp 300,000 each, he said, adding that the products had<br>\nwere of unrecommended materials like plastic pipes, foam rubber<br>\nand sheet iron.<\/p>\n<p>Standard quality limbs are made of fiber plastics, high<br>\nquality rubber and steel.<\/p>\n<p>The head of the office's programs, Abdillah, who is also in<br>\ncharge of the prosthesis project, said the office could not<br>\nprovide artificial limbs of good quality due to skyrocketing<br>\nproduction costs and the brief manufacturing period of the<br>\nproducts.<\/p>\n<p>\"I will ask the management of PT Indoraya, the producer of the<br>\nartificial limbs, to improve the quality of the products next<br>\nweek,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Abdillah said an improvement in quality was expected within<br>\none month.<\/p>\n<p>He said each artificial leg cost about Rp 675,000.<\/p>\n<p>The social services office promised earlier to provide 18<br>\nartificial legs to the handicapped under its annual program.<br>\n(ind)<\/p>",
