Jakarta (ANTARA) - Dr Farid Agung Rahmadi, a paediatric specialist in\nsocial paediatric growth and development, said that accommodation and\nmodification of learning at school can help children with Specific\nLearning Disorder (SLD) overcome their difficulties.<\/p>\n
Dr Farid Agung Rahmadi, M.Si.Med., Sp.A, Subsp. T.K.P.S.(K), speaking\nat an online seminar held by the Indonesian Paediatric Society (IDAI),\nexplained that learning accommodation is intended to help children\naccess lessons and achieve the same learning targets as their\nclassmates.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe principle of accommodation is to help children access lessons\nand demonstrate abilities equal to their peers\u2019 without changing the\nmain target,\u201d he said at the seminar, followed online from Jakarta on\nTuesday.<\/p>\n
As an example, he noted that schools may give a child an additional\n50 to 100 per cent more time than other students during exams.<\/p>\n
In addition, teachers can help by reading long texts aloud, giving\nchildren the opportunity to answer orally, using texts with larger\nletter sizes, or providing a low-distraction area for children with\nSLD.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf classmates get 10 questions, a child with a specific learning\ndisorder might be given five. But the same core competencies are still\nmeasured,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Learning modification can also take the form of reduced writing\ntasks, simplified reading material, or assessment that emphasises\nconceptual understanding rather than neatness and speed of writing.<\/p>\n
According to Dr Farid, applying accommodation or learning\nmodification for children with specific learning disorders should be\ndone through joint discussion involving parents, teachers and\nprofessionals.<\/p>\n
