Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government has set the mandatory\nimplementation of B50 biodiesel, which will be enforced simultaneously\nacross all sectors in Indonesia starting 1 July 2026. This policy forms\npart of strengthening national energy sovereignty while promoting the\nuse of more sustainable energy.<\/p>\n
As part of the national transportation system, PT Kereta Api\nIndonesia (Persero) is preparing measures to ensure the readiness of\nfacilities and operations, particularly for diesel-based locomotives,\nwhile maintaining service quality and journey safety.<\/p>\n
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication, Anne Purba, stated\nthat the implementation of B50 is a continuation of biodiesel\nutilisation in previous stages that has run consistently in the railway\nsector.<\/p>\n
\u201cKAI continues to utilise more environmentally friendly energy\nthrough biodiesel. In every stage, journey safety and service quality to\ncustomers remain the top priority,\u201d said Anne.<\/p>\n
In 2025, the use of B40 biodiesel in Long-Distance Train services\nrecorded total carbon emissions of 127,315,192 kg CO\u2082e, or about 127.3\nthousand tonnes, from 47.4 million passengers. Entering 2026, this\nsustainability trend continues. Up to the first quarter of 2026, the\nvolume of Long-Distance Train passengers was recorded at 14,515,350\npassengers, with estimated emissions of around 38.9 thousand tonnes\nCO\u2082e, which remains controlled alongside the consistent use of\nbiodiesel-based fuel.<\/p>\n
On the same mobility scale, the use of private vehicles has the\npotential to produce far higher emissions. The average emission per\nprivate vehicle journey can reach about 36\u201345 kg CO\u2082 per passenger for\nmedium distances, while trains are around 2.7 kg CO\u2082 per passenger. This\nshows that using trains can reduce emissions by about 90 percent per\njourney.<\/p>\n
With that passenger volume, train usage is estimated to have\ncontributed to a potential emission reduction of around 480 to 610\nthousand tonnes CO\u2082e compared to if the journeys were made using private\nvehicles.<\/p>\n
In supporting the B50 implementation, KAI collaborates with the\ngovernment through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and\nLEMIGAS (Oil and Gas Agency) in a series of phased testing.<\/p>\n
Testing is conducted starting from the fuel mixing process in\nmid-April 2026, followed by facility condition checks, to fuel usage\ntesting on locomotives at the Sidotopo Depot.<\/p>\n
At the same time, testing is also carried out on generator cars at\nthe Yogyakarta Train Depot. The testing series begins with initial\ninspections, followed by using B40 as a comparison, then using B50 to\nobserve facility performance, up to endurance testing under high load\nconditions.<\/p>\n
The next phase involves longer-term testing to ensure facility\nperformance remains maintained in daily operations.<\/p>\n
To date, all testing results are still in the evaluation stage and\ncontinue to be monitored to ensure long-term suitability.<\/p>\n
