        "content": "<p>Deputy Chairman of Commission V of the Indonesian House of\nRepresentatives (DPR RI), Syaiful Huda, urged civil society to actively\nparticipate in guarding and pushing for the acceleration of the\ndeliberations of the Gig Worker Bill in Indonesia. Public involvement is\nseen as the key to breaking the stalemate in Parliament, which has\nappeared to move forward and backward due to overlapping interests.<\/p>\n<p>This was stated by Syaiful Huda at a public discussion organised by\nthe Centre for Indonesian Policy Studies (CIPS) in Jakarta on Wednesday,\n4 March 2026. The discussion also featured Theodore Sutaro, Assistant\nDeputy for the Digital Economy at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic\nAffairs; Ambrosius Emilio, Advocacy Policy Division member of Sindikasi;\nand Lily Pujiati, Chair of the Indonesian Transport Workers Union\n(SPAI). In addition, representatives from APINDO, Gojek, Indrive, and\nother online service providers attended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBroad involvement from various quarters in the debate will provide\nmoral and political support to the government and the Parliament. We\nneed pressure from civil society so that the much-anticipated gig\nworkers law can be completed swiftly,\u201d said Huda.<\/p>\n<p>The PKB politician said that discussions of the Gig Worker Bill in\nParliament have been hampered by the many overlapping interests,\nresulting in a prolonged legal vacuum in the digital economy and\nself-employment sectors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn fact, millions of gig workers or independent workers in Indonesia\nare currently working without meaningful legal protection. Their status\nas self-employed workers has not been accommodated in the existing law\n(the Labour Act). If there is no breakthrough, this vulnerability will\npersist for a long time,\u201d he asserted.<\/p>\n<p>Huda cited the plight of online transportation workers as a stark\nillustration of injustice on the ground. Driver partners often face\nnon-transparent income deductions, tip deductions, and unclear\nalgorithms, with no strong mechanism for appeal. Moreover, the lack of\nsocial protection poses a serious threat to their livelihoods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSimilar vulnerabilities also loom over other professions in the\ncreative sector, such as film crew, content creators, and other creative\nworkers. They all operate in a legal grey zone,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The PKB DPP chair said he had launched the rights initiative to draft\nthe Gig Worker Bill. The initiative\u2019s draft includes several key points\nas protections for gig workers and business operators. Among the key\npoints are clarity of gig workers\u2019 status, a clear net income threshold,\nclarity on engagement duration, algorithm transparency, and a mechanism\nfor resolving industrial disputes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very open to input to refine the initiative for the Gig\nWorker Bill that we have proposed,\u201d Huda said.<\/p>",
