The presence of local and foreign colleges claiming to be
\naccredited by overseas principals and cooperating with national
\nuniversities to grant various academic titles is the talk of the
\ntown.<\/p>\n
The degrees range from master's degrees to doctorates and are
\noffered by phony colleges that are either hard to find or do not
\nexist. The degrees, meanwhile, are sought by military and police
\nofficers, officials, artists, entrepreneurs, religious
\npropagators and paranormal practitioners.<\/p>\n
Why are Indonesians so eager to possess academic titles,
\nthough only honorary? This can be traced back to the feudal
\nsystem, when people were judged according to their title.<\/p>\n
With the nation's development, this attitude further changed.
\nIn the 1950s and later decades, parents were most proud of the
\nuniversity degrees earned by their children. Today, people are
\nmore interested in master's and doctorate degrees.<\/p>\n
