Sumedang (ANTARA) - Professor Nana Sulaksana, Professor at the\nFaculty of Geological Engineering at Universitas Padjadjaran (FTG\nUnpad), has said that volcanic activity in neighbouring areas has no\ndirect connection, as each volcano has a different magmatic system.<\/p>\n
Speaking in Sumedang, West Java, on Monday, Prof.\u00a0Nana said these\ndifferences are influenced by the depth of the magma chamber, the\npathway of the magma, and the geological conditions and rock through\nwhich the magma passes before reaching the surface.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo there is no direct relationship between one volcano and another,\u201d\nhe said.<\/p>\n
He explained that the activity of each volcano needs to be monitored\nbased on its own characteristics and data, so an increase in activity at\none volcano cannot be taken as a direct indicator for another.<\/p>\n
\u201cEach volcano has its own system, depending on the depth of the magma\nchamber, the journey of the magma, and the rock it passes through,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The statement was a response to activity at several volcanoes in\nIndonesia which have also recorded eruptions in a period close to that\nof Mount Anak Krakatau, including Mount Ibu, Semeru, Lewotobi Laki-laki,\nIli Lewotolok and Sinabung.<\/p>\n
He believes the situation does not indicate a direct relationship\nbetween volcanic activities.<\/p>\n
On the same occasion, Prof.\u00a0Nana also said that Mount Anak Krakatau\nitself has been monitored intensively using various instruments to track\nthe development of its volcanic activity.<\/p>\n
Monitoring is carried out using seismographs to detect seismic\nactivity caused by magma movement, as well as GPS-based geodetic\ninstruments to measure changes or micro-movements in the body of the\nvolcano.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn that monitoring, several variables are observed, including the\nmovement of magma from deep within the earth. This movement is visible\non seismographs installed at a minimum of three points on the body of\nthe volcano,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
In addition, monitoring is reinforced by visual observation of smoke\nplumes, internet-connected CCTV, and multi-gas analysis to detect\nchanges in the volcano\u2019s activity.<\/p>\n
Historical eruption data and geological maps are also used as\nconsiderations in determining a volcano\u2019s status.<\/p>\n
Nana said Indonesia has a high level of geological disaster risk\nbecause it lies at the meeting point of three tectonic plates and within\nthe Pacific Ring of Fire.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe consequence is that we are indeed prone to earthquakes and\neruptions, but on the other hand, this condition also provides the\npotential for geothermal energy and mineral resources,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
