AC bus owners asked to review decision<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Lacking legal authority to withdraw the recent
\nfare increase for air-conditioned express buses, Governor Surjadi
\nSoedirdja yesterday appealed to bus owners to review their
\ndecision on the arbitrary fare hike.<\/p>\n
\"I urge AC bus operators not to charge passengers the new
\nfare. We've not yet been informed by Organda,\" Surjadi said after
\na ceremony to open low-cost apartments in Bendungan Hilir,
\nCentral Jakarta. \"Organda has broken the consensus,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Surjadi told reporters yesterday that the Organization of Land
\nTransport Owners (Organda) had not consulted the city
\nadministration before increasing the fare from Rp 1,300 to Rp
\n1,800.<\/p>\n
A gubernatorial decree can only legalize fare increases for
\nregular bus and other small transport vehicles.<\/p>\n
Surjadi said that although the AC bus fare is set by bus
\ncompanies, there is a consensus between Organda and the city
\nadministration requiring that Organda consult the administration
\nwhenever it plans to increase the fare.<\/p>\n
The fare controversy started last weekend when AC bus crews
\ncharged passengers Rp 1,800. Many passengers protested, saying
\nthey had not been informed about the increase.<\/p>\n
This apparently led city councilors to blame Organda for
\nfailing to officially announce the new fare to the public before
\nthe implementation date.<\/p>\n
Many passengers said the new fare is too high.<\/p>\n
\"There would not have been any protests if the people had been
\ninformed about the matter,\" Suryadi said. (yns)<\/p>",
