        "content": "<p>Abu Dhabi has begun deploying artificial intelligence (AI) technology\nin around 100 hospital operating theatres as part of an effort to build\na data- and AI-driven health system.<\/p>\n<p>The Abu Dhabi Department of Health is connecting operating theatres\nacross hospitals using Johnson &amp; Johnson\u2019s Polyphonic surgical\ntechnology platform. The programme forms part of the emirate\u2019s long-term\nstrategy to build an AI-native health system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not a classic and traditional health ministry,\u201d said Dr Noura\nAl Ghaithi, Deputy Secretary of the Abu Dhabi Department of Health, in\nan interview with Semafor on Thursday, 21 May 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The technology will record video and audio from the operating theatre\nwhile also collecting patient data, such as medical imaging results and\nmonitoring readings.<\/p>\n<p>The AI system will be deployed in hospitals operated by Cleveland\nClinic Abu Dhabi, PureHealth, Mediclinic, and NMC Healthcare.<\/p>\n<p>In the initial phase, the platform will function as a learning tool\nfor surgeons. Doctors will be able to replay their operative recordings,\nshare clips of procedures with colleagues, and evaluate mistakes and\nsuccesses during operations.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, pre-operative briefings, which have previously been\nconducted via WhatsApp or manual notes, will be digitised and stored in\na single integrated system.<\/p>\n<p>In the longer term, Johnson &amp; Johnson aims for the system to\nprovide real-time surgical guidance to surgeons, akin to cockpit\nnavigation in an aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson &amp; Johnson\u2019s Chief Scientist Peter Schulman said the\ntechnology could help doctors identify the patient\u2019s anatomical\nstructures before incision, reducing the risk of injury during\nsurgery.<\/p>\n<p>The ultimate aim is to create a connected operating theatre where all\nmedical devices and data sources can communicate directly with the\nsurgeon.<\/p>",
