Absurd acts of obstruction<\/p>\n
I sat amazed in a traffic jam observing Indonesian drivers
\nvying for an inch of space, while outside their mostly leaded
\ncars, poor children hawking their wares or musical talents for
\nspare change. It wasn't until we reached the traffic lights
\nthat the gridlock revealed a shameful picture. The intersection
\nwas blocked perpendicularly only. Directly ahead of us the road
\nwas absolutely clear of traffic. What's wrong with this picture I
\nthought? It reeked of a painful and sorry truth and that is a
\ndire need for compassion.<\/p>\n
1. For our humanity. Shouldn't these children be at school
\nwanting to become a pilot or something instead of one day
\nbecoming a medical burden, for all the poisonous lead their
\nlittle growing lungs consume?<\/p>\n
2. For our environment. People now assume that as long as the
\nlights are green it is their right to enter and sit within the
\nintersection, and commit other countless acts of obstruction to
\nthe natural flow of traffic. It's so wrong allowing this
\ninconsiderate behavior to continue.<\/p>\n
What can be done immediately to improve this appalling
\nonslaught of pollution on this astonishing planet of ours? This
\nplanet which generously bestrew the gift of life itself. Humbly
\nenough, not only in Indonesia. Though it's largely populated, its
\npeople are hugely ignorant of environment issues and the impact
\nof Indonesia's pollution on the rest of the world. We all concur
\nthat poverty and lack of education are the key factors. Until the
\nday of better distribution of funds and education. Here are two
\nsimple suggestions with immediate benefits.<\/p>\n
1. Call on multinationals or manufacturers of air filter masks
\nto print their logos or slogans on the actual masks and have them
\ndistributed among traffic beggars. What a powerful advertising
\ntool and sensational message, not to mention humanitarian act.<\/p>\n
2. Make it an offense to enter an intersection until the
\nintersection has been cleared of all traffic. Why don't you, the
\neducated passenger, refrain your driver from committing these
\nselfish, absurd acts of obstruction?<\/p>\n
Our planet and our people are suffering. I'm not a
\nmultinational nor a manufacturer, all I have is 18 years of
\nadvertising to bring to a worthy cause, who else will contribute
\ntoward a healthier future?<\/p>\n
