        "content": "<p>Absolute democracy &apos;can destroy UMNO&apos;<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Absolute democracy cannot be practiced by<br>\nMalaysia&apos;s ruling United Malaysia&apos;s National Organization (UMNO)<br>\nbecause it could ruin the party, a report quoted Deputy Premier<br>\nAbdullah Ahmad Badawi as saying on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Abdullah, heir apparent to Premier Mahathir Mohamad, said<br>\nwhile UMNO upheld democracy, there were times when it had to<br>\napply a &quot;little brake&quot; to its practices to protect the party from<br>\nfalling apart.<\/p>\n<p>The Sunday Star newspaper quoted him as saying that the<br>\nSupreme Council&apos;s advice against contests for the two top posts<br>\nin the party was aimed at preventing a split in UMNO.<\/p>\n<p>Mahathir and Abdullah cannot be challenged for the UMNO<br>\npresidency and deputy presidency after being nominated virtually<br>\nunopposed.<\/p>\n<p>Holders of the top two posts in the party, which has dominated<br>\ndomestic politics for half a century, are automatically prime<br>\nminister and deputy premier.
