ABRI reshuffles another hundred senior officers<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Armed Forces (ABRI) announced yesterday a
\nreshuffle affecting more than 100 senior officers in all four
\nservices, including the reassignment of onetime rising star Maj.
\nGen. A.M. Hendropriyono.<\/p>\n
ABRI Chief Spokesman Brig. Gen. Amir Syarifudin told Antara
\nthat Hendro would be recalled to ABRI headquarters, pending a new
\nassignment in a civilian position.<\/p>\n
Amir did not elaborate, but Suara Pembaruan daily reported
\nyesterday that Hendro, currently chief of the Army Training
\nSchool in Bandung, will be given the post of secretary for
\ndevelopment operations, a strategic position under the
\nsupervision of the State Secretariat.<\/p>\n
Some military analysts said the new civilian post would end
\nhis military career. Hendro is currently 51 years old; the
\nmandatory retirement age for military officers is 55 years.<\/p>\n
A 1967 graduate of the Military Academy, Hendro was once
\nregarded as one of the Army's most promising rising stars when he
\nbecame the youngest ever chief of a regional military command. He
\nbecame chief of the Jakarta Regional Military Command at the age
\nof 48 in 1993.<\/p>\n
Latest reshuffle<\/p>\n
Amir said the latest reshuffle in the military affects 108
\nsenior officers. As stipulated in a Sept. 16 decree by ABRI Chief
\nGen. Feisal Tanjung, 52 Army officers, 24 Navy officers, 13 Air
\nForce officers, and 19 officers of the National Police are being
\nmoved.<\/p>\n
Another major important change, announced Saturday, was the
\nreplacement of the current assistant to the chief of
\nsociopolitical affairs, Maj. Gen. Suwarno Adiwijoyo, who is
\nnearing the mandatory retirement age of 55.<\/p>\n
He will be replaced by his deputy, Brig. Gen. Budi Harsono,
\nwho will become the new assistant to Lt. Gen. Syarwan Hamid.
\nSuwarno will be recalled to the armed forces headquarters before
\nhe retires.<\/p>\n
The commandant of the Bandung-based Infantry Weapons Center,
\nMaj. Gen. Rachmad Mokoginta, is also being moved as he too is
\npreparing for his retirement. He will be replaced by his deputy
\nBrig. Gen. Luhut Panjaitan.<\/p>\n
Changes in the Navy include the reassignment of Maj. Gen.
\n(Marine) Gafur Chalik, currently aide to the ABRI chief, to the
\nNavy headquarters to prepare for his retirement.<\/p>\n
Commodore Freddy Numberi, currently aide to the navy Chief of
\nStaff, will be assigned as Chief of the Fifth Sea Born Command
\nbased in Irian Jaya, and Brig. Gen. (Marine) Benyamin Balukh,
\nwill be assigned as deputy chief of the Armed Forces School of
\nCommand.<\/p>\n
In the Air Force, Rear Marshall Sadeli Kalman, chief of the
\nAir Force's Maintenance Division will be replaced by Commodore
\nSyaiful Kartimunaf.<\/p>\n
In the National Police, Brig. Gen. Soerpadi will be assigned
\nas the new director for operational education at the National
\nResilience Institute, replacing Brig. Gen. I Wayan Karya. (imn)<\/p>",
