ABRI out to right blunders: Wiranto<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Defense and Security\/Armed Forces
\n(ABRI) Commander Gen. Wiranto, admitting that the military feels
\nthe negative fallout from policies which hurt the public, has
\npledged to persevere in putting matters right.<\/p>\n
\"ABRI continues to take steps to make improvement and
\ncorrections to various policies that inflicted losses to people,\"
\nhe told a gathering of thousands of Moslems from the greater
\nJakarta area who joined him in the dawn prayer yesterday at the
\nIstiqlal Grand Mosque in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"ABRI would not even hesitate to apologize for mistakes and
\nwrongdoings it committed in the past.\"<\/p>\n
Although Wiranto did not cite specific incidents, ABRI's image
\nhas been tarnished in recent months following revelations that
\nits units were involved in the kidnapping and torture of
\npolitical activists, and other violations of rights.<\/p>\n
Wiranto reminded \"all elements of the nation\" to share the
\nresponsibility and work together with a positive mindset.<\/p>\n
\"It would be a commendable act if we all engage in self-
\nintrospection and study all that we have done,\" he said. \"With
\nthis, everyone can understand their flaws and mistakes and start
\nto improve.\"<\/p>\n
He said the onus of fostering a public sense of security was
\nnot solely for the military, but one that should be shared and in
\nwhich the Moslem majority of the population should be at the
\nvanguard.<\/p>\n
\"It is not the task of ABRI alone to make people feel safe.
\nMoslems should become pioneers in the endeavor to create a
\nfeeling of security in the community.\"<\/p>\n
Moslems could help foster and maintain a sense of security
\nthrough refusing to engage in spreading rumors.<\/p>\n
\"Moslems should... set an example in speaking only what's
\ntrue and in a proportional manner,\" he said. He added that people
\nwere becoming bored of the slew of increasingly outrageous
\nhearsay.<\/p>\n
Quoting a saying of Prophet Muhammad, he said a community was
\nsimilar to the human body -- when one part is in hurt, the rest
\nalso suffers.<\/p>\n
He said the Armed Forces and all elements of the nation were
\ncommitted to lift the country out of the crisis immediately and
