ABRI lends full support to govt<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): In an unequivocal show of support for the
\ngovernment, Armed Forces (ABRI) commander Gen. Feisal Tanjung
\nsaid yesterday the military fully supported the steps being taken
\nto solve the monetary crisis.<\/p>\n
In a 10-point written daily instruction issued in conjunction
\nwith the New Year, the Armed Forces commander expressed support
\nfor the policies and a desire to help ensure they succeeded.<\/p>\n
In the instructions, disclosed to journalists by ABRI
\nspokesman Brig. Gen. A. Wahab Mokodongan, Feisal said all efforts
\nshould be aimed at regaining the country's self confidence.<\/p>\n
Point two stressed the need to help minimize Armed Forces
\nspending. Feisal called for stricter controls to avoid
\nunnecessary expenditure, while maintaining efficiency and
\neffectivity.<\/p>\n
Point three of the orders focused on the political climate.
\nThe Armed Forces commander called for the creation of a cool,
\nhealthy and conducive political climate.<\/p>\n
He further called on ABRI members to uphold political
\nstability and maintain security and order, which are vital for a
\nsustainable national development program.<\/p>\n
In terms of preserving the nation, Feisal suggested strong
\nABRI-public cooperation with the active participation of the
\npublic in preventing threats to national security and public
\norder disturbances.<\/p>\n
He called on ABRI members to take firm action to halt the
\nspread of malicious and false information.<\/p>\n
The \"daily orders\" of the Armed Forces commander is issued
\nrandomly, usually in conjunction with major events or a change in
\na military leadership post.<\/p>\n
Secure<\/p>\n
Mokodongan also said yesterday that the Armed Forces was ready
\nto secure the People's Consultative Assembly's general assembly
\nin March at which the country's president and vice president will
\nbe elected.<\/p>\n
\"ABRI has made all the necessary preparations to anticipate
\neven the worst situation,\" he told reporters during a media
\nbriefing.<\/p>\n
Wahab said the Armed Forces was also extremely happy to see
\nmany of its members being touted as candidates for the vice
\npresidency.<\/p>\n
\"We're really proud that people still trust our members for
\nstate leadership positions,\" he told reporters.<\/p>\n
As of yesterday, 13 names had been registered as vice
\npresidential candidates at the assembly.<\/p>\n
Six have a military background: incumbent Try Sutrisno,
\nMinister of Defense and Security Gen. (ret) Edi Sudradjat,
\nMinister of Information Gen. (ret) R. Hartono, State Minister of
\nNational Development Planning Vice Marshall (ret) Ginandjar
\nKartasasmita, Armed Forces Chief. Gen. Feisal Tanjung, and Army
\nChief of Staff Gen. Wiranto.<\/p>\n
Wahab, however, declined to mention the Armed Forces'
\ncandidates for the presidency and vice presidency.<\/p>\n
\"ABRI will declare its presidential and vice presidential
\ncandidates in time,\" he said, \"Otherwise, other MPR factions will
\nnot have the courage to mention any names other than ours.\"<\/p>\n
\"The presidential and vice presidential election will not be
\ndemocratic anymore if other factions do not have the courage to
\nnominate different names,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Wahab said that the armed forces would only come up with one
\nname for each position.<\/p>\n
He also said that the most important thing was not the number
\nof candidates, but the nation's commitment to accept whoever is
\nelected as president and vice president next March.<\/p>\n
The armed forces headquarters also announced yesterday the
\npromotion of 17 officers.<\/p>\n
The most senior officer promoted was T.P. Sihombing, currently
\ndeputy chief of the Armed Forces Intelligence Agency (BIA), who
\nwas promoted from a one-star to a two-star general.<\/p>\n
The other 16 were promoted from colonels to one-star generals.<\/p>\n
Five of the officers are from the Army, four from the Navy,
\nseven others from the Air Force and the remaining one from the
\nNational Police headquarters.<\/p>\n
Other promoted officers included Army spokesman Brig. Gen. I
\nDewa Putu Rai and the deputy chief of the Navy's Sea Military
\nOperations, Commodore Fred. S. Lonan. (imn)<\/p>\n
