ABRI faction calls for probe into hotel incident<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Armed Forces (ABRI) faction in the House of
\nRepresentatives called for a thorough investigation yesterday
\ninto the shots fired on Sunday at a five-star hotel and the Bank
\nBumi Daya Tower.<\/p>\n
Faction chief Maj. Gen. Suparman Achmad said that the incident
\ndeserves special attention because it has "serious" implications.<\/p>\n
News that a long-barrel rifle was used has given rise to
\nspeculation that an individual from the Armed Forces may have
\nbeen involved.<\/p>\n
Suparman suggested that it should be determined if the rifle
\ncame from ABRI's arsenal and what the motive behind the action
\nwas. "ABRI has complete lists of its rifles," he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, House member Andi Matalatta said the incident
\nshould serve as a warning for ABRI to be vigilant against arms
\nabuse by irresponsible members of the armed services.<\/p>\n
He said that he believed the shootings were criminal in nature
\nand that they sparked fear of similar incidents in the future.<\/p>\n
"This is serious. The use of an assault rifle suggests that
\nsecurity authorities have been negligent in the control of their
\narms," he said.<\/p>\n
Police have interviewed eight witnesses in connection with the
\nincident.<\/p>\n
Two of the witnesses told police they heard shots between 6
\na.m. and 6:30 a.m. near their homes in Jl. Teluk Betung.<\/p>\n
City police spokesman Lt. Col. Iman Haryatna said yesterday
\nthe shots were most likely fired from a skyscraper in Jl. Teluk
\nBetung.<\/p>\n
"Both of the witnesses claimed that they only heard the sound
\nand forgot the precise number of shots fired," Iman told
\nreporters.<\/p>\n
Police also questioned three other local residents, a hotel
\nemployee and two security guards.<\/p>\n
Police refused yesterday to comment on speculation that the
\nincident was connected to the wedding reception of movie star
\nOngky Alexander Harianto and company executive Paula Ayustina
\nSaroinsong.<\/p>\n
"It's too early to comment," Lt. Col. Iman said.<\/p>\n
Ongky and Paula celebrated their wedding at the hotel on
\nSaturday night.<\/p>\n
Paula is an executive of a company run by Siti Hardiyanti
\nRukmana. Her office is located on the 23rd floor of the Bank Bumi
\nDaya headquarters.<\/p>\n
Ongky gained notoriety when he was tried in connection with a
\nland scam involving millions of rupiah, but was found not guilty.<\/p>\n
Yesterday, police were examining two slugs from the shooting.<\/p>\n
Police have found two spent bullets at the hotel and another
\nin an office in the bank building.<\/p>\n
The bullets went through five-millimeter plate glass windows
