ABRI and mass organizations<\/p>\n
The explanation by chief spokesman of the Armed Forces (ABRI)
\nBrig. Gen. Suwarno Adiwijoyo about the birth of several new mass
\ninstitutions bearing the names of former organizations, deserves
\nattention.<\/p>\n
As reported by this newspaper, the information chief said ABRI
\nwas greeting the birth of organizations with names such as New
\nPNI, New Parkindo and New Masyumi with an open mind.<\/p>\n
\"The important thing is that those new organizations are
\nuseful and constitutional,\" Brig. Gen. Suwarno said.<\/p>\n
We view the emergence of new mass organizations -- whether or
\nnot they bear the names of formerly existing ones -- as an
\nindication of the need for new institutions to represent the
\npeople's aspirations.<\/p>\n
Some of their proponents have stated that the new
\norganizations which they helped to establish were intended to
\npush the nation towards progress. They have stated their
\ncommitment to forge those organizations into vehicles that
\nincrease the channels for the expression of the people's
\naspirations in a constitutional manner.<\/p>\n
It is worth noting that one of the criteria of a modern state
\nis the existence of a diversity of social and political
\norganizations. When this criteria is applied, the emergence of
\nnew organizations constitutes a gain which could have a
\nbeneficial effect on this nation's diversity.<\/p>\n
Viewed in the context of domestic conditions, the great number
\nof new organizations that have appeared can be seen as a positive
\nexpression of the freedom of assembly and association which is
\nguaranteed by the Constitution.<\/p>\n
