ABRI and democratization<\/p>\n
It is heartening to hear the affirmative remarks made by Armed
\nForces Chief Gen. Feisal Tanjung concerning the Armed Forces's
\n(ABRI) stance in support of democratization and improving
\npeople's welfare.<\/p>\n
From the beginning, ABRI's dual function doctrine, which is
\naimed at ensuring both security and welfare at the same time, has
\nbeen directed toward a faithful and consistent implementation of
\nour constitution. Like ABRI, the Indonesian people also regard
\nour constitution as one that ensures that sovereignty is in the
\nhands of the people -- which is to say that it is a democratic
\nconstitution. Therefore, any social-political development which
\nmay be regarded as part of our democratization process, must be a
\nlegitimate part of our passage toward a faithful and consistent
\nimplementation of our constitution -- a goal which the Armed
\nForces has set itself to achieve.<\/p>\n
At the time of the transfer of the post of Chief of Staff of
\nthe Army from Gen. Hartono to Gen. Wiranto, Armed Forces Chief
\nGen. Feisal Tanjung expressed ABRI's commitment to support our
\nefforts at democratization. He also said that within ABRI itself,
\ndemocracy, in the sense that differences of opinion are
\nlegitimate, is valued and respected. This was demonstrated by the
\npresence of senior officers who, so far, are not always in
\nagreement about the manner in which ABRI is realizing its
\ncommitment to support the democratization process.<\/p>\n
We hope that the resolve and the message conveyed during that
\nceremony will be followed up with concrete action by the Army and
\nABRI leadership to promote the process of democratization.<\/p>\n
