Abortion rate on the rise<\/p>\n
SURABAYA, East Java: The number of abortions in the country
\ncontinues to climb steadily, currently reaching an alarming rate
\nof one million per year.<\/p>\n
Sexologist Wimpie Pangkahila of the School of Medicine at
\nBali's Udayana University said here on Friday that the rise in
\nabortions was due to increased promiscuity.<\/p>\n
\"Freer sexual practices which began in the 1980s have not only
\nled to a rise in sexually transmitted diseases but also
\nabortions,\" he said as quoted by Antara.<\/p>\n
He conceded that \"liberal\" views of sex were hard to curb as
\nthe world prepared to enter the third millennium.<\/p>\n
\"I believe the most appropriate way to handle this is to
\nencourage better awareness through sex education.\"<\/p>\n
He said that a recent study of teenagers in Bandung, West
\nJava, showed that nearly 4 percent of junior high school students
\nand 12 percent of high school students acknowledged engaging in
\nsexual relations.<\/p>",
