Abdi wins int'l award for Monas lighting project<\/p>\n

Indonesian lighting designer Abdi Ahsan Wira, 37, has won a
\nprestigious award from the Chicago-based International
\nAssociation of Lighting Designers (IALD) for his work on the
\nNational Monument (Monas) park in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Abdi was one of the only two award winners from Asia, joining
\na lighting designer involved in the Galleria West project in
\nSouth Korea.<\/p>\n
In the 22nd annual IALD awards presentation in New York on
\nApril 13, the association recognized 23 projects in seven
\ncategories -- academic institutions, corporate institutions,
\nhospitality, residential, retail\/entertainment, site\/facade and
\nmonumental structure\/public spaces.<\/p>\n
Abdi received the Award of Merit in the monumental
\nstructure\/public spaces category, along with lighting designers
\ninvolved in the DeVos Performance Hall project in the U.S., the
\nJubilee Church project in Italy and the Rion Antirion Bridge
\nproject in Greece.<\/p>\n
\"I tried to use different colors and techniques in the
\nlighting system to highlight and rekindle the spirit symbolized
\nby the Monas tower,\" Abdi said.<\/p>\n
Continuously changing and colored floodlights transform the
\nmonument into a perpetual flame symbolizing the nation's spirit,
\nsaid the graduate of Bandung Technology Institute's School of
\nApplied Physics.<\/p>\n
White and clean illumination also create a solemn and graceful
\natmosphere for the monument, he said.<\/p>\n
Abdi said the greatest challenge he faced in the Monas
\nlighting project was to develop lighting that would serve both a
\nrecreational and a commemorative function.<\/p>\n
In addition to a recreation spot for Jakartans, the park also
\nhonors the country's struggle for independence.<\/p>\n
\"Hopefully, similar projects will be developed in the future,
\nespecially projects that explore the importance of lighting in
\nany architectural development project,\" Abdi said.<\/p>\n
He said many projects here neglected the lighting factor,
\nwhich plays a key role in creating a healthy and aesthetic
\natmosphere at workplaces and public places.<\/p>\n
The IALD was established in 1969 and currently has 700 members
\nthroughout the world. Its main goal is to set a global standard
\nfor lighting design projects.<\/p>\n
For this year's awards, the association received 141
\nsubmissions from 14 countries.<\/p>",
