Iran\u2019s internet blackout continues a week after joint United States\nand Israel military strikes against a number of strategic targets in the\ncountry. The situation has left millions of Iranians isolated from\naccess to information and digital communications.<\/p>\n
Global internet monitoring organisation NetBlocks reported that by\nthe end of this week internet traffic in Iran remained around 1% of\nnormal levels, indicating that nearly the entire national digital\nnetwork remained non-operational.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt has been one week since Iran fell into digital darkness because\nof the national internet blackout imposed by the regime,\u201d NetBlocks said\nin a recent statement on social media, citing CNBC.com, Sunday 8 March\n2026.<\/p>\n
The blackout, lasting more than 168 hours, has left Iranians\nstruggling to obtain updates on developments in the conflict, to contact\nfamily, and to access important online services. Meanwhile, government\nofficials and state media are said to still have network access.<\/p>\n
Military Conflict Continues<\/p>\n
At the same time, US and Israel military operations against Iran\ncontinue. The attack campaign was launched to target Iran\u2019s nuclear and\nballistic missile capabilities, while also increasing pressure on\nTehran.<\/p>\n
Airstrikes are reported to be ongoing against several strategic\nfacilities suspected of links to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps\n(IRGC).<\/p>\n
This situation heightens concerns that the conflict may not be\nconfined to conventional warfare, but could spill into the digital realm\nas well.<\/p>\n
Alleged Mix of Internal Shutdown and Cyber Attacks<\/p>\n
Several analysts believe the internet disruption in Iran may not be\nsolely due to government policy restricting domestic network access.<\/p>\n
Kathryn Raines, head of cyber threat intelligence at security\nplatform Flashpoint, previously said the disruption was likely triggered\nby a combination of government internet suppression and external cyber\ndisturbances.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe exact cause is not yet clear, but it is almost certainly a\ncombination of state-imposed restrictions and external cyber\ndisturbances,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Iran has not yet issued an official statement regarding the cause of\nthe internet outage.<\/p>\n
Cyberwar Threat Heightens<\/p>\n
Cybersecurity firms also warn that Iran could respond to the conflict\nwith retaliatory cyber attacks against countries or institutions\nconsidered adversaries.<\/p>\n
Adam Meyers, head of Counter-Adversary Operations at CrowdStrike,\nsaid they have detected activity consistent with Iran-affiliated hacker\ngroups.<\/p>\n
According to him, the groups have begun conducting digital\nreconnaissance and launching denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks against\nseveral targets.<\/p>\n
