        "content": "<p>A thought for the IMF<\/p>\n<p>Coordinating Minister for the Economy Dorodjatun Kuntjoro-<br>\nJakti said extension of the Indonesian contract with the <br>\nInternational Monetary Fund (IMF) to December 2003 was made <br>\nbecause the country still needed the fund's assistance.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, State Minister of National Development Planning <br>\nKwik Kian Gie said Indonesia should sever its contract with the <br>\nIMF because the latter's advice on the country's economy has not <br>\nborne any good fruit.<\/p>\n<p>Former finance minister under the New Order Fuad Bawazir has <br>\nurged the government to form a team that will be tasked to <br>\nevaluate the IMF's performance in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>The independent team will hopefully determine whether <br>\nextension of the contract is advantageous or not. <br>\nThe contract with the IMF, which has already been extended for <br>\nanother year, was first signed in 1997.<\/p>\n<p>Signing the contract was a hasty decision made by the panic-<br>\nstricken New Order administration during the onset of a financial <br>\ncrisis.<\/p>\n<p>It is high time to review the decision.<\/p>\n<p>-- Media Indonesia, Jakarta<\/p>",
