A television program watchdog?<\/p>\n
The idea to establish a formal organization to protect the
\npublic against programs that are \"incompatible with the nation's
\nidentity\" is being tossed about again. This time, the idea was
\nproposed by House of Representatives member Suko Waluyo and a
\nnumber of other speakers at a seminar on \"Television and the
\nNational Identity\".<\/p>\n
The body would actually be nothing more than a logical
\nconsequence of an old and widespread complaint: more and more
\ntelevision programs are unsound, incompatible with the nation's
\nculture and morality, and so forth.<\/p>\n
It is an exaggeration to believe that television is the main
\nfactor that shapes modern human culture, especially among
\nchildren. However, is also incorrect to belittle the influence of
\ntelevision on children.<\/p>\n
As we have seen on many occasions, government agencies have
\ntended to stress their supervision of the political aspects of
\ntelevision and the press. Where cultural considerations are
\nconcerned -- aside from the fact that very few rules exist and
\nare usually not very specific -- those agencies usually restrict
\ntheir actions to appeals.<\/p>\n
Therefore a supervising body would indeed fill a void. It
\ncould act as a watchdog and an advisory organization. It could
\nlist viewers' complaints and systematically and consistently
\nsubmit them to television stations. It could, of course, also
\ntake the initiative.<\/p>\n
If this was done properly, the television stations might also
\nbenefit.<\/p>\n
