A supremacist?<\/p>\n
In the Netherlands, the country I come from, Masli Arman would
\nbe renounced as a white supremacist who tries to sweet talk his
\nway out of the guilt of the injustices done to an ethnic group in
\nIndonesia. I'm not sure what to call an Indonesian with the same
\nattitude, perhaps one could call him a Moslem-supremacist (which
\nis just as bad).<\/p>\n
In his article in The Jakarta Post on July 30, Masli Arman
\nhides a message that the rape of Chinese-looking women and girls
\nis all right because some ethnic Chinese do not conform to his
\nstandards. He tries to make an oversimplified case by relating
\nstereotypical incidents between ethnic Chinese and indigenous
\nIndonesians and the riots. I've never read such nonsense in the
\nPost before, so let me respond to the article.<\/p>\n
Perhaps Masli Arman should realize that the humiliation and
\ntrauma of being gang raped certainly is not the same as having to
\nclean a toilet or being paraded as a thief. In my opinion there
\nis no excuse whatsoever for the rape of any women or girl; the
\nmen who do that should be publicly castrated with two stones and
\nbe left on the roadside to bleed to death!<\/p>\n
I also wonder what language and customs Masli Arman uses when
\nhe is with Minangkabau family or friends; my experience is that
\nthe different ethnic groups in Indonesia all prefer their local
\ndialect and customs. Calling that disrespect for the Indonesian
\nlanguage or customs is senseless. What about the \"Unity in
\nDiversity\" principle of Pancasila, shouldn't it encompass ethnic
\nChinese as well as ethnic Minangkabau?<\/p>\n
Furthermore, Masli Arman acknowledges that about 70 percent of
\nthe so-called ethnic Chinese have fairly assimilated. Yet he
\nstill relates to them as ethnic Chinese. The statement that he
\nwill call them Indonesians when they all have assimilated thus is
\nat the least dubious.<\/p>\n
Even more ridiculous is his statement that the current crisis
\nwas caused by Chinese speculators and\/or multinationals. Sure,
\nthere are speculators using the crisis for their own profit and
\nthus increasing its effects, but not only Chinese speculators.<\/p>\n
And clearly the root of the crisis also lies in the political
\nand social instability of Indonesia. There were clear
\ndepreciations of the rupiah after several of president Soeharto's
\npresentations of the new Development Cabinet earlier this year
\nand after the riots.<\/p>\n
Let me use Masli Arman's simplistic stereotyping on himself,
\nto underline the stupidity of it: he'll probably rape my 13-year-
\nold daughter because I refuse to throw my garbage out on the
\nstreet as \"all\" Indonesians do, or because I complain about his
\nsmoking on the bus and poisoning me with the fumes. I won't even
\nmention similar racial nonsense about the discriminative
\ncharacter or the corruptibility of Indonesians, but hope you see
\nthe stupidity of it. I also hope the article doesn't reflect the
\nopinion of the editors of the Post, and they will be more careful
\nwith articles in the future.<\/p>\n
