        "content": "<p>A slew of Asian documentaries to be screened at TUK festival<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Teater Utan Kayu (TUK) and the Japan Foundation<br>\nare bringing the world of documentary filmmaking to Jakarta this<br>\nweek with their Asian Documentary Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p>On offer is a diverse range of documentaries from all over<br>\nAsia, which will be shown from Wednesday to Saturday. Several of<br>\nthe films have won international recognition at documentary film<br>\nfestivals abroad.<\/p>\n<p>TUK's film curator Rayya Makarim said that she hoped the film<br>\nfestival would introduce an often-neglected aspect of filmmaking<br>\nto the Indonesian public.<\/p>\n<p>She expected to capitalize on the recent success of the<br>\nJakarta International Film Festival (JiFFest), which was held in<br>\nNovember 1999 and which exposed the Jakarta movie-going public to<br>\nalternative genres of filmmaking.<\/p>\n<p>Films to be screened on Thursday show such diverse subjects as<br>\nsenile dementia  (How to Care for the Senile by Haneda Sumiko,<br>\nJapan), suffering at the hands of the Indonesian Military in Aceh<br>\n(Kambing Kampung Kena Pukul\/A Beating for the Village Goats by<br>\nAryo Danusiri, Indonesia)  and a young man struggling to deal<br>\nwith irrational violence encountered in the military (I Love by<br>\nYang Li-zhou, Taiwan).<\/p>\n<p>Friday's showings include a special inclusion by the Italian<br>\nCultural Institute on religious rites in Bali (Musica e Trance in<br>\nun Villaggio Balinese Pino Confessa\/A Trance Festival in a<br>\nBalinese Village by Vito Di Bernardi and Giovanni Giuriati,<br>\nItaly). At 4:30 p.m, there will be showings of a parody of the<br>\nThai sex industry (Exotic 101 by Michael Shaowanasai, Thailand),<br>\nthe story of a mother living below the poverty line in Jakarta<br>\nwhose two children suffer from a rare blood disease (Sarinem by<br>\nMira Lesmana, Indonesia), and a film exploring discrimination by<br>\njuxtaposing Mickey Mouse with Sayomi (Princess Plum P-udding by<br>\nTerashima Mari, Japan).<\/p>\n<p>There will be a screening at 7 p.m. on Friday of an<br>\nexperimental documentary on traditional wooden boat building<br>\n(Child of Mermaid by Faizal Mohd Zulkifli and Naguib Razak,<br>\nMalaysia) and a documentary recording the daily meeting of a<br>\ngroup of old men on a street corner (Old Men by Lina Yang Tian-<br>\nyi, China).<\/p>\n<p>Saturday's features include a picture of the rise of Hindu<br>\nnationalism in India (In the Name of God by Anand Patwardhan,<br>\nIndia\/2 p.m.), and the standoff between a left-wing filmmaker and<br>\nultranationalist punk rockers devoted to the Japanese emperor<br>\n(The New God by Tsuchiya Yutaka, Japan\/4:30 p.m).<\/p>\n<p>There will also be a discussion on Saturday at 7 p.m featuring<br>\nMohd Naguib Razak of Malaysia, Tsuchiya Yutaka of Japan and<br>\nIndonesia's Shanty Harmayn.<\/p>\n<p>-- Oren Murphy<\/p>",
