A show of wanting sincerity<\/p>\n
Extraordinary. This is the expression that best describes both
\nthe findings of the TGPF (Joint Fact Finding Team on the May
\nriots) and the reaction from high-ranking cabinet officials to
\nthe team's report. The TGPF findings, arrived at after three
\nmonths of labor and made public on Tuesday, are indeed
\nextraordinary.<\/p>\n
We greatly appreciate the efforts made and the integrity of
\nthe team's members. All the shortcomings of the report
\nnotwithstanding, the team's courage in stating facts that are
\npainful not only for the government but also for the nation,
\ndeserves to be commended.<\/p>\n
No less interesting, however, is the response given by the
\nauthorities concerned, who in their reactions have shown
\nthemselves lacking in good judgment concerning this matter. As in
\nchorus, they generally regretted the TGPF's apparent digression
\nfrom its originally assigned role of fact-finding to analyze
\nevents as well. But how can facts have any meaning without
\ncontextual analysis?<\/p>\n
This rejection (of the TGPF report) was already evident at the
\ntime when the findings were announced, as none of the cabinet
\nministers who signed the decree that established the team in
\nattendance.<\/p>\n
We find this attitude most disturbing as it appears to show
\nthe government's insincerity about solving the problems that
\naffect the interests of the people at large. If the authorities
\ncannot properly appreciate the work of a team which the
\ngovernment itself has formed, how could they ever be expected to
\nacknowledge the work of non-governmental organizations which are
\nactive in many other fields?<\/p>\n
