A shadow from the past<\/p>\n
For quite a while now we have been presented with various news
\nstories about the movement for an Indonesian Islamic State (NII).
\nSuch stories inevitably arouse concern within us. The name NII
\nitself, invariably awakens a traumatic pain, particularly for the
\nWest Javanese people. It is a burden of the past, which cannot be
\neasily thrown away as, for decades, NII has caused not only
\nphysical injuries but also a heavy mental burden.<\/p>\n
In recent years, the name NII has been reported more often in
\nthe mass media, particularly in Bandung, where we have read that
\nthere are many activities associated with NII. More worrisome,
\nthose involved in these activities are the young generation.<\/p>\n
Many stories about the activities of NII in West Java have
\nactually not vanished although the NII movement with its Darul
\nIslam has physically been crushed. Its leading figure,
\nKartosuwiryo, has also been sentenced to death. Yet, his shadow
\nstill continues to haunt people until now.<\/p>\n
Considering a comprehension of history among our people is
\nlacking, it is likely that today's young people do not have
\ncomplete information about NII. The history of NII, like other
\nhistories, has not been written in perspective yet. Meanwhile,
\nthe future generation, of course, really needs this information.
\nDue to their lack of education, many young people do not know the
\nhistory of their own people. So, when the name of NII comes up,
\nfor example, they know next to nothing about it.<\/p>\n
