Jakarta and other<br>\nregions are reported to have collected illegal levies from<br>\nparents. In Tangerang, the government junior high schools<br>\ncollected Rp.700,000 from new entrants without giving them a<br>\nclear breakdown. The official payment is only about Rp.95,000.<br>\nConsequently, many clever elementary school graduates can not be<br>\nadmitted into government high schools, simply because they can<br>\nnot afford the bribes demanded of them.<\/p>\n<p>Such corruption is clearly symptomatic of the corrupt morality<br>\nin the educational sector, something we should be profoundly<br>\nashamed of. Maybe the pupils' moral degradation which finds<br>\nexpression in student brawls or drug use stemmed from the low<br>\nmorality prevailing among teachers and administrators. The<br>\nminister of education and culture Wardiman Djojonegoro should not<br>\nremain passive and idle. Warnings alone are not enough. Firm<br>\naction is required.
