A problem of communication<\/p>\n
The phrase \"Ciganjur Group\" is used to circumvent the use of
\nthe word opposition, which is still abhorred in our political and
\nofficial vernacular. This group -- which in the context of
\nSunday's meeting with (Armed Forces Commander Gen.) Wiranto
\nacquired the additional word \"plus\" because of the presence of
\n(Moslem intellectual) Nurcholish Madjid -- is a representation,
\nand at the same time a personification of the collective
\nconscience of those who have been left out -- not to say locked
\nout -- of government.<\/p>\n
Unique is perhaps the position of Sultan Hamengku Buwono X in
\nthe Ciganjur Group. Being the governor of the Special Area of
\nYogyakarta, what is he doing in this group? Could his inclusion
\nhave been meant to lend legitimacy to what would otherwise be an
\nobnoxious opposition? Judging by the Sultan's stance and actions
\nit would seem that he is fully aware of his position and that his
\njoining the group was deliberate. This would signify that he
\nwants change and is at the same time anticipating change.<\/p>\n
Then there was Nurcholish Madjid, a scholar who is known for
\nhis integrity. Whether intentional or not, his presence in the
\nCiganjur Group strengthens this nongovernmental component. There
\nare many other people like Nurcholish who need to be made aware
\nof the fact that they too possess authority. It is people like
\nNurcholish whom those with political interests are at present
\ntirelessly courting.<\/p>\n
The political dimensions (of the meeting) could be wide and
\ncomplex if one were to analyze the event. The meeting took place
\nat a stage where the idea of a national dialog or a national
\nreconciliation has already been adamantly rejected by the
\ngovernment. It was held with the Ciganjur-Plus Group, which is
\nthe most significant pressure group at the moment.<\/p>\n
As far as we are concerned, the more often government and
\nnongovernment leaders meet, the better, especially if the crucial
\nproblems of the nation are part of the discussions. Communication
\nand interaction among our fellow citizens must not be limited to
\nlegal forums -- such as in the House of Representatives or
\nthrough general elections -- only. This nation's most critical
\nobstacle lies in its inability to find a compromise to settle
\ncrucial problems.<\/p>\n
