A new agreement<\/p>\n
Following Wednesday's meeting of economic ministers, the
\nresults of three weeks of negotiations between Indonesia and the
\nInternational Monetary Fund were made public by the Coordinating
\nMinister for Economy, Finance and Industry\/Chairman of the
\nNational Development Planning Board Ginandjar Kartasasmita. The
\nmain points of the agreement will be elaborated in further detail
\nin separate appendices dealing with the matters of monetary
\npolicy and interest rates, restructuring of the banking sector,
\nbudgetary provisions for assistance to the poor, reformation and
\nprivatization of state-owned enterprises, structural reforms,
\nrestructuring of private offshore debts and judicial reforms,
\nincluding the drafting of a bankruptcy law.<\/p>\n
The 4 percent negative economic growth figure that is now
\nbeing projected unquestionably paints a gloomy picture. However,
\nin order to get out of the monetary and economic crisis which is
\nnow in its ninth month -- and which may be getting even worse
\nunless it is checked in time -- there is no choice for us but to
\ntake the proper steps that could effectively lead us into the
\nright process of surmounting the situation. To this end, every
\neffort, however difficult, must be made.<\/p>\n
All those efforts, however, can only succeed if we, as a
\nnation, are really willing to proceed as one and share the burden
\ntogether.<\/p>\n
