        "content": "<p>A matter of rights<\/p>\n<p>In past years anyone who was branded as a member or supporter<br>\nof the PKI (Indonesian Communist Party) had to face death,<br>\nwhether physically or socially. The PKI mark was also a most<br>\neffective weapon in the hands of those who were in power to<br>\ndispose of anyone who differed in their opinions.<\/p>\n<p>Now, after 34 years, that stigma is beginning to fade.<br>\nLegislators in the House of Representatives discussing new<br>\npolitical draft laws have decided to allow relatives of former<br>\nmembers of the PKI, formerly barred from the legislature, to be<br>\nelected. Finally, the political stigma that lasted for more than<br>\nthree decades is being exorcised.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesian society at present is entering a new era of<br>\nenlightenment. There is a very strong feeling that the present<br>\nreading of our history needs to be totally corrected. As part of<br>\nthis correction, the institutionalized and doctrinaire<br>\ninstruction of our Pancasila national ideology has been<br>\ndiscontinued.<\/p>\n<p>After the collapse of communism in the Soviet Union, animosity<br>\namong communities of people on the basis of ideology no longer<br>\nexists. Capitalism, liberalism and socialism now coexist as open<br>\nand tolerant ideologies. It would therefore be most inhumane for<br>\nus to use the Pancasila ideology to which we subscribe as a wedge<br>\nto create feelings of hostility towards other ideologies,<br>\nincluding communism; or worse, to use Pancasila as a verbal-<br>\nideological instrument to incarcerate our own fellow citizens.<\/p>\n<p>The extension of political rights to family members of ex-PKI<br>\nmembers and supporters must be seen as a realization of their<br>\nhuman rights, not as an ideological inconsistency. The use of<br>\nideology to coerce one's own citizens leads to totalitarianism,<br>\nwhile a complete negation of it leads to anarchy.<\/p>\n<p>-- Media Indonesia, Jakarta<\/p>",
