Another official statement regarding plans to build a nuclear
\npower plant has been made. Minister of Research and Technology
\nB.J. Habibie, after meeting with Australia's Foreign Minister
\nAlexander Downer on Thursday, said that the use of nuclear energy
\nto provide electric power was lowest on the priority list in
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
We understand that our future need for electricity will be
\nhuge and that nuclear power is one of the alternatives for
\nproducing electricity on a large scale at a comparatively modest
\ncost. On the other hand it cannot be denied that the risk which
\nnuclear power brings to life is just as great, while the impact
\nof accidents are long-lasting. It is this consideration which
\nmotivates opponents to reject the presence of nuclear power
\nplants.<\/p>\n
The dilemma caused by the dwindling of conventional power
\nsources on the one hand and the specter of nuclear accidents on
\nthe other dictates that adequate precautions be observed to
\nensure the protection of lives.<\/p>\n
We appreciate the rational and objective stance which the
\ngovernment has been taking with regard to the planned
\nconstruction of a nuclear power plant. Pending further
\ndevelopments, the concerns that have been voiced deserve to be
\nheard.<\/p>\n
