        "content": "<p>A lamentable tragedy<\/p>\n<p>Media reports of the recent bloody incident at Trisakti<br>\nUniversity have prompted much reaction from almost every segment<br>\nof society. Students staged commemorations on their own<br>\nrespective campuses and at Trisakti University in a show of<br>\nsolidarity for their dead colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>The Trisakti tragedy is not only a sad event, but a shameful<br>\none -- and all the more so since it was shown on international<br>\ntelevision networks. Immediate reactions have come from Australia<br>\nDeputy Prime Minister Tim Fisher and U.S. Secretary of State<br>\nMadeleine Albright.<\/p>\n<p>The demonstrations, which have become increasingly frequent<br>\nand widespread lately, have caused the rupiah to slide ever<br>\ndeeper. On the Jakarta spot market, the currency fell to a low of<br>\nRp 11,150 per U.S. dollar before closing at Rp 10,900. At 9 p.m.<br>\nWestern Indonesian Time, the rupiah even touched a low of Rp<br>\n11,375 per dollar on the New York market. A similar downslide<br>\naffected the stock market.<\/p>\n<p>The Trisakti tragedy also directly affected foreign investor<br>\ninterest. According to State Minister of the Empowerment of State<br>\nEnterprises Tanri Abeng, two of eight parties who had expressed<br>\nan interest in participating in the privatization of state-owned<br>\nenterprises have even pulled out. This is easy to understand,<br>\nsince stability, besides economic considerations, is a major<br>\nfactor in attracting foreign investment.<\/p>\n<p>We are deeply concerned and we share in the grief which this<br>\ntragedy has caused. Students in their idealism naturally always<br>\nyearn for positive change. Security officers, on the other hand,<br>\nare duty-bound to maintain public security and order without<br>\nkilling the students' creativity and idealism.<\/p>\n<p>We strongly disapprove of anyone who seeks to dominate or even<br>\ndestroy others for the sake of mere passing interests.
