'A good heart' diagnosis for Abdurrahman<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Abdurrahman Wahid was told he had a
\ngood heart after undergoing a six-hour medical checkup at Harapan
\nKita Cardiac Hospital in West Jakarta on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Speaking to journalists after his arrival at his official
\nresidence in Merdeka Palace, the President said the medical
\ncheckup had been scheduled since last month and he quoted doctors
\nas telling him the condition of his heart was excellent.<\/p>\n
He joked that doctors had given him permission to continue his
\nhobby of eating delicious food.<\/p>\n
\"I was told that everything is fine,\" Abdurrahman, who is also
\nknown as Gus Dur, said.<\/p>\n
Security officials initially asked journalists not to ask any
\nquestions to the President, saying he was too exhausted after the
\nexamination.<\/p>\n
But after getting out of his car at Merdeka Palace,
\nAbdurrahman turned back to journalists after First Lady Sinta
\nNuriyah and eldest daughter Alisa Quotrunnada Munawaroh told him
\nthat they were waiting for him.<\/p>\n
\"There is no problem. It was only a checkup. My heart exam had
\nbeen scheduled for awhile. I was told it would be held at Harapan
\nKita today. So I just went there,\" Abdurrahman said.<\/p>\n
Earlier in the afternoon, Cabinet Secretary Marsilam
\nSimanjuntak, who is also a doctor, said results of the checkup
\nshowed Abdurrahman was healthy and there was no need to worry.<\/p>\n
Asikin Hanafiah, who led the team of doctors during the
\ncheckup, said the health examination checked the condition of the
\nPresident's heart, blood and brain.<\/p>\n
\"He only underwent a checkup, because as a President he must
\nmeet basic health standards,\" Asikin told journalists at the
\nhospital.<\/p>\n
The checkup came after a mild public scare on Feb. 25 when
\nAbdurrahman was suddenly told by doctors to rest. The President
\nwas diagnosed as suffering from influenza at the time.<\/p>\n
Since then he has resumed his activities without any signs of
\nany real medical handicap.<\/p>\n
Concerns of Abdurrahman's health remain due to the fact that
\nhe was hospitalized for two months after a stroke in January
\n1998. He then underwent brain surgery at state Cipto Mangunkusumo
\nHospital. He was also treated for hypertension in July 1997. He
\nalso has diabetes.<\/p>\n
But friends close to him have said that since becoming
\nPresident his past medical condition had not shown any signs of a
\nrelapse.<\/p>\n
As if to prove that he is in tiptop shape, Abdurrahman went
\nafter the examination to Serpong, West Java, to give his
\ncondolences to his close friend Yusuf Faisal, whose mother
\nrecently died.<\/p>\n
He will resume on Wednesday his daily activities, which
\ninclude a planned visit to former president Soeharto's residence
\non Jl. Cendana, Central Jakarta. (prb)<\/p>",
