A disturbing tendency<\/p>\n
Once again police posts have been attacked. As reported by the
\nmedia, two police headquarters, one in Polongbangkeng, Takalar,
\nSouth Sulawesi, and another in Bagansinembah, Bengkalis, Riau,
\nwere attacked by mobs on Wednesday. This was the umpteenth time
\nthat such an attack against police headquarters has occurred.
\nLast Aug. 3 the police headquarters of Pelabuhan Ratu was
\nattacked by a mob, and on Aug. 31 a similar incident occurred in
\nPameungpeuk, near Garut, West Java.<\/p>\n
The general impression of those earlier cases is that such
\nincidents are caused by inaccurate information reaching the
\npublic, from rumors which despite their questionable credibility
\nhave tended to incite people to anger. Another impression is that
\npeople lately have tended to be easily provoked into taking the
\nlaw into their own hands.<\/p>\n
In this context, the observation made some time ago by
\nMinister of Defense and Security Edi Sudradjat that mob
\ndestructiveness has now already reached the threshold of
\ntolerance may be very much relevant. People tend to lightly take
\nthe law into their own hands without even trying to obtain
\ncomplete and accurate information in order to better assess the
\nissue at hand.<\/p>\n
Considering all of this, we appeal to people not to be too
\ntrusting of information whose reliability is in doubt, even
\nthough that information originates from people who are considered
\nrespectable. Informal leaders in society should help urge the
\npublic to be more rational rather than act on their emotions.
\nBesides trying to get an accurate picture of the situation, they
\nshould also help find a solution that is acceptable to all.<\/p>\n
In addition, we are convinced that the series of attacks that
\nhave occurred lately against police offices will prompt
\nauthorities to reflect on what has happened in order to enable
\npolice to do a better job protecting and serving the people.<\/p>\n
