A deepening of ties<\/p>\n
Singapore's relations with Indonesia, which has been close,
\nare getting closer with the latest agreements to expand
\ncooperation in tourism and air services between them. The two
\npacts signed in Yogyakarta last week are a measure of the
\nbroadening and deepening bilateral ties that have developed in
\nrecent years.<\/p>\n
All things considered, the compacts will open the door wider
\nfor Singapore investors who are looking for new joint ventures in
\nIndonesia. Whatever form the economic linkages take, they must be
\nmutually beneficial in order not to give ground for detractors to
\nsay that Singapore is benefiting at Indonesia's expense.
\nBusinessmen must resist the temptation of short-term gains and go
\ninstead for the long haul. They must remember that Indonesia,
\nwith a population of 185 million, is a vast market with huge
\npotential.<\/p>\n
Singapore's growing involvement with the Indonesian economy
\nextends beyond tourism, a fast growing sector, to manufacturing,
\ninvestments and industrial parks. The bilateral economic
\ncooperation thus rests on a broad base and, as BG Lee put it,
\n\"each project you do gives you more basis for trust and
\nconfidence on both sides\". Given the commitment and groundwork
\nlaid by the two governments, it is for businessmen in both
\ncountries to make good the opportunities. The political leaders
\nhave set the bearings. It is up to them to venture further
\nafield.<\/p>\n
