        "content": "<p>A change in focus of city development urged<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The deputy head of the Land Transportation<br>\nAgency, Dimmy Kirbrandiman, suggested on Friday the next<br>\nadministration consider developing the capital around railway<br>\nstations.<\/p>\n<p>Dimmy said building the city around railway stations would<br>\nmake maximum use of trains and help ease traffic congestion.<\/p>\n<p>\"Today, office complexes and apartments pack the city's main<br>\nroads and thoroughfares. The administration has always been<br>\noriented toward the city's main roads,\" Dimmy said at City Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Dimmy said the result of this was vacant railway stations and<br>\ncongested toll roads.<\/p>\n<p>\"If the administration continues building along the central<br>\nroads, thoroughfares like Jl. Sudirman and Jl. Thamrin will never<br>\nbe clear of traffic. It's also impossible for the administration<br>\nto keep on extending the roads in the capital.\"<\/p>\n<p>Dimmy cited the example of Pesing railway station in West<br>\nJakarta, which is some 200 meters from the bustling business<br>\ndistrict of Daan Mogot.<\/p>\n<p>\"That station is not surrounded by any activity... it's like<br>\na village. The station, therefore, is useless.\"<\/p>\n<p>Another railway station which is underutilized is the Pondok<br>\nJati station in Jatinegara, East Jakarta, according to Dimmy.<\/p>\n<p>\"Pondok Jati is surrounded by slums. A low-cost apartment<br>\nblock in the area, like the Tanah Abang apartments in Central<br>\nJakarta, would help local residents with their transportation,\"<br>\nDimmy said.<\/p>\n<p>According to data from the State Railway Company, there are 90<br>\nstations in Greater Jakarta, of which at least 75 are constantly<br>\nactive.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the busier stations are Kota in West Jakarta; Cikini<br>\nand Gambir in Central Jakarta; and Lenteng Agung, Pasar Minggu,<br>\nTebet and Manggarai in South Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>Dimmy said that to base development on the location of railway<br>\nstations, the administration should promote the construction of<br>\noffice complexes in areas like Sawah Besar in Central Jakarta and<br>\nMangga Dua and Mangga Besar in West Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>\"People would then use the Kota station more often,\" he said.<br>\n(ylt)<\/p>",
