79 firms support partnership program<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Seventy-nine more conglomerates have declared
\nsupport for the government-sponsored program to develop
\npartnerships with small and medium businesses, Minister of
\nCooperatives and Small Enterprises Subiakto Tjakrawerdaya said
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
The minister said the 79 conglomerates would set up a body to
\norganize and coordinate all their activities related to the
\npartnership program.<\/p>\n
\"They have actually set up partnerships with small-scale
\nbusinesses but they consider it better to coordinate their
\nactivities through a cooperation forum,\" he said after a meeting
\nwith business leaders.<\/p>\n
He said that none of the 79 conglomerates were included in the
\nJimbaran group of large businesses.<\/p>\n
The Jimbaran group includes 48 tycoons who met in Jimbaran,
\nBali, two years ago to work out tangible programs to help small
\nbusiness and eradicate poverty.<\/p>\n
\"The new group is not going to compete with the Jimbaran
\ngroup. It is simply another group of big businesspeople like the
\nJimbaran group,\" Subiakto said.<\/p>\n
The meeting yesterday was presided by Coordinating Minister
\nfor Production and Distribution Hartarto. The chairman of the
\nIndonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Aburizal Bakrie,
\nalso attended.<\/p>\n
The 79 conglomerates include Mercu Buana group, Sahid,
\nMatahari, Gobel, Gramedia, Kalbe Farma, Nugra Sentana, Kalimanis,
\nTexmaco, Jan Darmadi, Hadtex, ALatief Corp., Tamara, Gunung Sewu,
\nTempo, Batik Keris, Mustika Ratu, Modern and Bukaka.<\/p>\n
\"It's easier to coordinate a smaller number of businesspeople
\nthan a larger one,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The conglomerates set up a task force yesterday headed by
\nSukamdani Gitosardjono of the Sahid group. The task force is
\nexpected to establish a formal organization for the group.<\/p>\n
The task force includes Mochtar Mandala of Bank Duta, Harry
\nDarmawan of Matahari group, Rachmat Gobel of Gobel group,
\nMooryati Soedibyo of PT Mustika Ratu and Achmad Kala of Bukaka
\ngroup.<\/p>\n
Sukamdani said the task force would meet for a week to prepare
\nan organizing committee and make a comparative study of various
\npartnership programs, including those being implemented by the
\nJimbaran group, to find the most suitable and effective one.<\/p>\n
\"For sure, we shall not raise funds and simply distribute them
\namong small-scale businesses and cooperatives like the Jimbaran
\ngroup has been doing. We will instead mobilize the potential of
\nlarge and medium businesses to help small ones and cooperatives
\nimprove themselves,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The Jimbaran group spent Rp 2.1 trillion (US$889 million) last
\nyear on its partnership programs with small businesses and
\ncooperatives.<\/p>\n
State enterprises have also been developing partnership
\nprograms with small enterprises and cooperatives. They have spent
\nRp 687 billion on their programs since 1990. (jsk)<\/p>",
