A total of 756 workers at PT Sumber Grahend Sejahtera (SGS) in\nSemarang Regency, Central Java, have been laid off. The company is\nundertaking efficiency measures due to ongoing losses.<\/p>\n
The Head of Industrial Relations and Social Security for Labour at\nthe Semarang Regency Manpower Office (Disnaker), Chandra Wijayanto,\nconfirmed the layoffs of the 756 PT SGS employees. He explained that PT\nSGS, a plywood factory, operates under the Sampoerna Strategic\nGroup.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe situation for the Sampoerna Group\u2019s timber division is currently\nunstable across Indonesia. All branches have implemented efficiency\nmeasures, including this latest case in Butuh, Tengaran, where 756\npeople have been laid off,\u201d Chandra stated during an interview on\nTuesday (2\/9\/2026).<\/p>\n
He added that the layoffs were carried out because PT SGS has been\nexperiencing losses for at least the last three years. According to\nChandra, these losses have been audited by public accountants, though he\ndoes not yet know the primary cause of the company\u2019s deficit.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe timber industry has been sluggish, even before the Covid\npandemic. Post-Covid, it has yet to recover,\u201d Chandra remarked.<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, Chandra noted that PT SGS is still operational.\nAccording to data from the Semarang Regency Manpower Office, the number\nof PT SGS workers prior to the layoffs was 2,612.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have directed the company to engage in bipartite negotiations\nregarding the rights of those affected by the layoffs, as stipulated by\nlaw, such as 0.5 PMTK (Minister of Manpower Regulation) for permanent\nemployees. Meanwhile, non-permanent or contract employees will receive\ncompensation in accordance with Government Regulation (PP) Number 35 of\n2021,\u201d said Chandra.<\/p>\n
According to Chandra, the majority of the affected workers were\npermanent employees. The official termination of employment for these\nworkers took effect on 31 August 2026.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnder the agreement between the parties, the severance pay will be\npaid in ten instalments over ten months, with payments made on the 15th\nof each month. We will continue to monitor these payments, both at the\nregency and provincial levels, on every scheduled date,\u201d Chandra\nadded.<\/p>\n
He revealed that the Semarang Regency Manpower Office will continue\nto provide assistance to the affected PT SGS workers, including\nproviding information on job vacancies.<\/p>\n
