        "content": "<p>717 people nabbed in overnight raid<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Police arrested 717 people in a massive<br>\novernight security-and-order operation in Jakarta, Bogor,<br>\nTangerang and Bekasi yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Police said the people arrested included suspected<br>\nprostitutes, hoodlums, unlicensed alcohol sellers, unlicensed<br>\nparking attendants, residents without legal identification cards<br>\nand &quot;three-in-one&quot; children.<\/p>\n<p>Three-in-one children are those who receive a fee for<br>\ntraveling with the driver of a car who is carrying less than the<br>\nminimum three passengers on certain roads during peak hours.<\/p>\n<p>Capt. Dwi Sigit of the operation and command control center of<br>\nthe city police, which carried out the operation, said the 717<br>\npeople arrested during the operation, known as Kilat Jaya,<br>\nconsisted of 615 males, 92 females and 10 transvestites.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;They were nabbed in various places, such as bus terminals,<br>\nred-light districts and on the street,&quot; Sigit said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Sigit, 168 of the people arrested were<br>\napprehended in Central Jakarta, 166 in North Jakarta, 93 in East<br>\nJakarta, 86 in South Jakarta, 99 in West Jakarta, 63 in<br>\nTangerang, 30 in Bekasi and 12 in Depok.<\/p>\n<p>After being detained at the respective local police stations<br>\nfor several hours, the people suspected of committing &quot;minor<br>\nviolations&quot; of the rules on security and order were made to line<br>\nup in the scorching afternoon sun at the city police headquarters<br>\nfor more than one hour.<\/p>\n<p>They were then handed over to various city agencies, such as<br>\nthe social service agency, to receive lectures on how to become<br>\nlaw-abiding citizens.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the detainees told The Jakarta Post that they very<br>\nmuch deplored the way the authorities had arrested them. Some<br>\nsaid they had been denied an opportunity to let their families<br>\nknow where they were. Others said they had been arrested simply<br>\nbecause they had failed to produce their identification cards,<br>\nhaving inadvertently left them at home.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;They arrested me while I was having a cup of coffee at a<br>\nsmall coffee shop in Jatinegara at 4 p.m. yesterday, after I<br>\nfailed to show my identity card -- because it had been stolen,&quot;<br>\nsaid Edi Siregar, 38.<\/p>\n<p>He said he was unhappy because he had no way of letting his<br>\nwife and children know that he was okay.<\/p>\n<p>Indah, 18, who was also arrested for failing to produce her<br>\nidentification card, said: &quot;I really can&apos;t understand why the<br>\npolice arrested me just because I left my identification card at<br>\nhome.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>She said that the police had refused the Rp 75,000 (US$33) her<br>\nsister had offered them to release her.<\/p>\n<p>Indah said she was arrested while having dinner at a food<br>\nstall on Jl. Gadjah Mada, West Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about the complaints, a police officer replied: &quot;We know<br>\nvery well who and what they are.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Capt Sigit said: &quot;Suspected criminals arrested in the<br>\noperation were handled by local police offices.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Head of the Operation and Command Control Center, Col.<br>\nMuhantojo, told reporters on Tuesday that the city police would<br>\nintensify their security operations to ensure safety in the<br>\ncapital during the upcoming celebration of Indonesia&apos;s 50th year<br>\nof independence on Aug. 17.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Basically this is a routine operation, but police intend to<br>\nintensify it in an effort to strengthen security in the city,&quot; he<br>\nsaid, adding that the operation would crack down on people who<br>\ndisturbed public order.
