700 workers quit with severance payment<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Seven hundred female workers officially quit
\nfrom two garment factories in North Jakarta yesterday after
\nreceiving severance pay from their employers.<\/p>\n
The payment ended the month-long dispute over the employers'
\nplan to transfer the workers to other companies for business
\nreasons.<\/p>\n
The solution was reached last week through the mediation of
\nthe local office of the Ministry of Manpower.<\/p>\n
PT Bestextindo and Kwalitexindo, both under the management of
\nMayatexdian Industry Group, granted severance pay because the
\nworkers firmly opposed the employers' plan and said they
\npreferred dismissal with severance pay.<\/p>\n
The employers' decision to pay between Rp 200,000 (US$90) and
\nRp 800,000 to each employee depending on seniority surprised the
\nworkers because people who had resigned previously received only
\nbetween Rp 85,000 and Rp 100,000 each.<\/p>\n
The employees in dispute with the management had worked at the
\ntwo companies between one and eight years.<\/p>\n
\"The employers have been very wise in their decision,\" said
\nIndriani, head of the local unit of the All Indonesian Workers'
\nUnion (SPSI), told The Jakarta Post,.<\/p>\n
The conflict emerged when the two companies decided to
\ntransfer the workers to other garment companies because,
\naccording to sources at the management, business at PT
\nBestextindo and Kwalitexindo was declining.<\/p>\n
The workers rejected the idea because they had heard the new
\nfactories would not take into account their working experiences.<\/p>\n
\"The buildings are not large enough to accommodate us,\"
\nIndriani said.<\/p>\n
But the management told the Post that it would arrange
\neverything in such a way that there would be no inconvenience.<\/p>\n
As a result of the workers' refusal to move, the management
\nput them on \"inactive\" status from September, but continued to
