700 schools heavily damaged<\/p>\n
TANGERANG (JP): At least 700 of a total of 987 state
\nelementary school buildings in 26 districts of Tangerang regency
\nare heavily damaged and need immediate renovation, an official
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
"The Tangerang administration can only allocate Rp 25.3
\nbillion (US$2,976,471) from its annual budget this year for
\nbuilding renovation. With that sum, only 102 buildings can be
\nrenovated," head of Tangerang Educational Infrastructure Agency
\nHarun Al-Rasyid told The Jakarta Post in an interview here on
\nTuesday.<\/p>\n
Harun said such damage was caused by old age, poor quality of
\nbuildings, poor maintenance and natural causes like humidity,
\nespecially for school buildings along Tangerang's northern
\ncoastal area.<\/p>\n
However, Harun expressed gratitude over the application of
\nregional autonomy, which requires the regency administration to
\npay more attention to education problems in the area.<\/p>\n
He stated that for the 2002 annual budget, 512 schools had
\nasked the Agency for renovation. "After carrying out surveys, we
\nselected 76 school buildings that needed total renovation and 262

JAKARTA (JP): No less than 120 elementary and junior high
\nschool students will be offered scholarships for the current
\nschool year from PT Sarinah, the oldest department store in the
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
The store, known for its batik and handicrafts, is offering
\nthe scholarships in commemoration of its 39th anniversary and the
\ncountry's 56th Independence Day anniversary, which concurrently
\nfall on Aug. 17.<\/p>\n
Sarinah, established on Aug. 17, 1962, was one of the four
\nlandmarks of the capital in the 1960s. It was built on the
\ninitiative of the country's first president, Sukarno, who also
\ndesigned its logo. The other three landmarks were Hotel
\nIndonesia, Senayan Sports Complex -- now called Bung Karno Sports
\nComplex -- and the National Monument or Monas.<\/p>\n
Sarinah is offering the scholarship to needy students living
\nnear the department store on Jl. Thamrin, Central Jakarta. The
\nscholarship is in the form of school fees for the whole school
\nyear.<\/p>\n

Tangerang (JP): The Tangerang administration is scheduled to
\nstart construction of an integrated bus terminal in Poris Plawad
\ndistrict next month, an official said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Tangerang Zoning Agency chairman Didi Achmadi Djamhir said
\nthat the Ministry of Finance was expected to approve the budget
\nfor the project later this month.<\/p>\n
"The integrated bus terminal will be built on a seven hectare
\nsite and will cost Rp 23 billion (US$2.71 million)," Didi told
\nThe Jakarta Post on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
He said that the Tangerang administration had allocated a
\ntotal of Rp 13 billion from its annual budget, while the
\noutstanding balance would be obtained from the Asian Development
\nBank (ADB).<\/p>\n
Didi said the bus terminal was aimed at alleviating traffic
\njams in Kalideres, Cikokol and Kebon Nanas. "Once it is
\ncompleted, it will be able to accommodate 170 intercity buses, 90
\ncity buses and 106 public minivans," he said. (41)<\/p>",
