70 more foreign sex workers arrested<\/p>\n
Only two days after 68 foreign sex workers were arrested in
\nseveral nightclubs, saunas and beauty salons, city police
\nannounced on Friday that they had arrested 70 more foreign sex
\nworkers.<\/p>\n
Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Firman Gani said the police
\nalso arrested four alleged pimps who had brought the women to the
\ncountry and provided them with accommodation.<\/p>\n
\"Together with previous arrests, we have detained around 180
\nforeign workers. We are still examining who committed immigration
\noffenses. If they abused their visas by working as sex workers we
\nwill deport them as soon as possible.<\/p>\n
\"If their visas are valid, they will be allowed to stay,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Firman added that the women, who come from China, Uzbekistan,
\nRussia and other East European countries, were liable to be tried
\nat court if it was discovered that they committed other crimes,
\nsuch as drug trafficking.<\/p>\n
He said the police were questioning the four pimps to find out
\nwhether they were members of a syndicate as well as to locate
\ntheir associates.<\/p>\n
The raids, conducted under the Kencana Pura operation, are the
\nfirst against foreign sex workers in the capital.<\/p>\n
\"We will continue the operation until Jakarta is void of
\nforeign sex workers. We suspect that many other foreigners are
\nlikewise abusing their visas, as we have arrested so many of them
\nin so few days,\" Firman said.<\/p>\n
Observers suspect that the police and the immigration office
\nare collaborating with people to protect foreign sex workers,
\nsince little had previously been done by the two institutions to
\neliminate such workers from capital. -- JP<\/p>",
