Java landslides<\/p>\n<p>Agus Maryono, The Jakarta Pos, Banyumas<\/p>\n<p>A total of 67 houses were destroyed by landslides in Banyumas and<br>\nCilacap regencies in Central Java early on Monday, following the<br>\nincessant downpour on Saturday and Sunday in the region.<\/p>\n<p>At least 20 houses were badly damaged in Tlaga village in<br>\nBanyumas and 47 others were totally destroyed in Dayeuh Luhur<br>\nvillage in Cilacap.<\/p>\n<p>There were no human casualties in the disasters but more than<br>\n400 people have been forced to take refuge in safer areas in the<br>\ntwo regencies.<\/p>\n<p>More food aid was flown in from the provincial administration<br>\nand numerous non-governmental organizations to the local<br>\nadministration to be distributed to the refugees.<\/p>\n<p>Banyumas Regent Aris Setiono called on all people living in<br>\nmountainous areas of the regency to move to safer areas due to<br>\nfresh fears of more landslides in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\"We call on all people living in mountainous areas and on the<br>\nslopes of hillsides to move to safe areas because more and more<br>\nlandslides are expected to occur during the rainy season,\" he<br>\nsaid when he met and handed over food aid to the landslide<br>\nvictims in Tlaga on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>He said the flood and landslides that destroyed more than 60<br>\nhouses two weeks ago have caused more than Rp 3 billion in<br>\nmaterial losses to local people.<\/p>\n<p>More than 150,000 hectares of rice fields were also damaged in<br>\nthe regency. Farmers who had previously received special credit<br>\nunder the farm credit scheme have asked the government for debt<br>\nrelief because of their damaged crops.<\/p>\n<p>Cilacap Regent Hery Tabri also made a similar demand as he was<br>\ndistributing humanitarian assistance to landslide victims in<br>\nCilulu, Pucung Datar and Ciparahu villages.<\/p>\n<p>He said he asked the Volcanology and Disaster Mitigation<br>\nagency in Bandung to seriously study and identify areas prone to<br>\nlandslides in the regency.<\/p>\n<p>\"The local administration will not allow local people to<br>\nestablish their houses in areas prone to landslides,\" he said,<br>\nadding that the landslides and flooding had cost local people<br>\nmore than Rp 2.5 billion.<\/p>",
