        "content": "<p>600 migrants take refuge<\/p>\n<p>DILI, East Timor: About 600 migrants have fled to Atambua in<br>\nthe neighboring West Timor province since ethnic and religious<br>\nviolence broke out here more than week ago, the governor said<br>\nSaturday.<\/p>\n<p>Abilio Joe Osorio Soares said the migrants, mostly traders,<br>\nfled Maliana and Dili after the rioters had burned down markets<br>\nand harassed them.<\/p>\n<p>Abilio apologized to the public for the violence sparked by a<br>\nMeliana prison official who allegedly insulted Catholicism, the<br>\nmain religion in the former Portuguese territory.<\/p>\n<p>The rioting ended up in dozens of burned shops, vehicles and<br>\nplaces of worships while migrants were harassed and more than 10<br>\nwere arrested.<\/p>\n<p>Abilio said the local government is seeking funds to rebuild<br>\nmarkets in Meliana, Dili, and the surrounding areas affected by<br>\nthe incidents.<\/p>\n<p>The governor said he supported Bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes<br>\nBelo's proposal for open talks between the government and the<br>\nlocal people to seek ways to end violence in East Timor.
